A regional finalist in the Global Social Venture Competition Southeast Asia Round in 2008, Lex Reyes of RuralLight returns to Bangkok to share about the process of actually starting up the business.

RuralLight is one of the 25% of businesses plans that actually succeed in getting off the ground after undergoing the process of GSVC.

RuralLight is very excited to test the lamps of D.light as a possible next opportunity for this venture! D.light is very much aligned with what RuralLight does and bringing in their solar lamps to the Philippines would provide a great opportunity to individuals and families in off-grid areas to extend their study and work hours after sun down.

We are currently testing the lamps for conditions here in the Philippines and will start with our market test soon!

RuralLight Gets Support from YSEI

The Youth Social Enterprise Initiative (YSEI) has announced ten fellows for its 2008-2009 round. These ten youth from South East Asia represent ten social development projects in the region that utilize Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in making life better through sustainable efforts.

RuralLight represented by Lex Reyes, is one among the three Filipino projects that have qualified for support for this round of YSEI Innovators.

YSEI is a high-engagement social venture program for emerging young social entrepreneurs in developing countries. Through its Fellowship Programme, YSEI provides young social entrepreneurs with support in four key areas:

Knowledge: Essential development knowledge & tools on social entrepreneurship
Financing: Up to USD 60,000 from Seed, Start Up and Scale Up stages for only 2 ventures
Mentorship: Technical consulting through mentorship
Networks: Access to diverse networks

Bringing Community to Alternative Energy

RuralLight creates knowledge and information facilities for renewable-energy powered rural communities. These facilities will provide communities with instant access to information, engaging and empowering them to join the marketplace. The goal is to make the communities more productive in the short term, and economically sustainable in the long run. In addition, based on the venture’s social outcomes, the organization also sees decreased rural to urban migration, a carbon neutral environment and increased work and study hours.

The organization is in the process of setting up its pilot site funded by the Youth Social Enterprise Initiative, which is a special project of the Global Knowledge Partnership together with the Swiss Development Cooperation.
